If you don't understand fighting just know this, those guys were fighting but once winner realized the other guy was out cold he could have let him go and let hit head smack off the ice (fun fact most concussion come from the unconscious head hitting the ground not the punch) but he held his collar and made sure he didn't let his head bounce.

It is more effective at stopping dick moves that can injure players than referees. Most teams have an enforcer or two with a reputation that precedes them. Asham is one of them. If you look him up you'll see a highlight reel of fights ( https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=aaron+asham ). Enforcers do not "usually" cause problems but they do solve them. Players know not to fuck around against certain teams lol.
