He had a hypothesis, he tested the hypothesis, his hypothesis appeared true for roughly 16 months, then his hypothesis was no longer valid and he was unable to correct for observations but had left conditional instructions to others to do same.

In the modern era of a replicability crisis he is actually quite a component medical researcher.
