It does appear that many of these people actually "believe" the lies they are spreading (i.e. they are not just playing along for a payout or because of intimidation/threats).
In some ways this is bad. If all these people holding the reigns of power truly believe they are right, even as the evidence to the contrary becomes undeniable, they will double down to defend their ego and pride (human nature).
In some ways this is good. If all these people are not "insiders" but just deceived people, then it is possible that they could "snap out of it" with enough bodies of loved ones around them.
