The reality is 90% the time Drs have no clue what the problem is and they give you a placebo so you'll wait until the body heals itself.
I would say it depends on what's wrong. They are good at putting you back together after an injury.
I'd guess most of the time, the medicine does have some beneficial effect, but a great many have side effects which may outweigh the benefits.
