There's an island in Japan called Tashirojima aka Cat Island. Decent sized fishing island with tons of cats the people there take care of. Dogs are prohibited from the island. Apparently it's always been that way, the fishermen would give them fish, today they food the cats at the cat-themes shinto shrines.
