Phosphates were banned from laundry detergent, which only accounted for 10% of phosphate use. Big business can still use it, but you have to buy inferior detergents. Same deal with high efficiency washers. You have to run an extra rinse cycle because an inferior product was mandated by government. They love fucking the citizenry.
And the new washers only last a year or two before the electronics go haywire so you have to buy a new one. There's a high demand for used washers with the electomechanical works and cams, but they're almost gone now.
Same deal with cars during that Cash for Clunkers scam.
Luckily if you have a traditional washer you can still get parts no problem. I've got a washer from 1990 still in service. Only repairs have been the drain pump and clutch.
True. I just replaced a pump after ten years of daily use.
Sounds like a market opportunity.
