Joe Kent announced on Tuesday that effective immediately, he was stepping down as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center due to the United States’ ongoing military operation in Iran, saying he "cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war" in the Middle Eastern country.

Kent had been appointed to the position by Trump in early 2025.
