I think the misconception people have is intelligence is akin to ability to be in office. I disagree on that and argue that the DUMBER a person is, the easier they are to place into a position. BOTH parties want people who can be controlled as figure heads. Critical thinking hampers this. Even Trump suffers from this. A lot of Poal'rs are probably to young to understand this reference, but if you ever wondered what a Dan Quayle run/presidency would have been like, we're about to find out.
