Funny thing - this is exactly how the whole 'united states' thing is supposed to work. In theory, you have more control over the state in which you live than over the Federal government, so by living with people who think like you, you can live the way you want.
It only becomes "Balkanization" when ((( the press ))) wants to paint one side of the argument as the bad guys. It wouldn't even be much of an issue if the feds were limited to the powers outlined in Articles 1, 2, and 3.
