I hate, hate, hate red flag laws. I was with an abusive husband at one point. He controlled me completely, mostly with threats to my cat and to have me committed. He constantly threatened to have me committed while we were together. 5250 is what it is called in Cali. We weren't in Cali but apparently most states have something similar. He threatened to call my work and get me fired by telling them lies (I spoke to HR the first time he threatened it, so hopefully nothing would have happened).

When I finally left the threats continued. When I was with him I'd never been allowed to have a gun because I'm sure he knew I could use it to protect myself against him.

If red flag laws existed when I left he surely would have used them against me. These laws don't protect anyone and actually prevent people from being able to protect themselves.

I managed to get away and hide for 10 months. I was still randomly hearing from him in stalker ways 5 years later. It's been a decade or so now but I still think he might be able to find me. I just hope he found someone else to distract himself with.

These types of laws are just terrifying for those if us who have been with manipulative enough people who would gladly use them against us.
