Okay so here's how I spent my afternoon: I did my taxes last night, and I owe a special tax to Oregon that they didn't withhold correctly. The State Transit Tax. Okay, I owe them $1.00. They don't take payments online or by phone for this type of tax. You have to:
(1) Print out the tax form.
(2) Find an envelope. I literally never mail anything so I can't find them. Oh, wait, there are a few left in a box in the back of the office.
(3) Make a copy of my W-2.
(4) Write a check... I could not find my checkbook, because I literally do not know when the last time I wrote a check, so I had to go stand in line for 30 minutes to get a money order for one dollar. (By the way, the fee for the money order was also $1.00, so now we are at a running total of $2.00.)
(5) Get a stamp... when was the last time I mailed something? Last year at tax time? ($1.26... the running total is now $3.26.)
This trip involved a trip to Kinko's to make a copy, a trip to Walmart to get a money order, and a trip to the Post Office to buy one stamp. Guess what? If you use the machine, you have to buy TWO stamps because they have a minimum purchase. So I guess I'm all set for stamps for when this happens again NEXT year.
This process took an hour and a half. For one dollar. And it cost me $3.26 plus my gas driving all over town to pay it.
Kafkaesque.
And don't even get me started on Turbo Tax... they lobby (bribe) the federal government to keep taxes complex so that they can extract the maximum profit from the slaves.
