I believe Alvin is looking forward to his next election for a bigger office. He wants to brag about prosecuting Trump to simpleton voters who don't realize (or care) that this case, contrary to making him look good, demonstrates his gross incompetence, amoral character, or likely both.

The RNC will push DeSantis (most likely) and intentionally divide the "conservative/sick of socialism and facism" vote. Spiltting the vote makes cheating plausible and easier. Maybe they get a conviction that will be overturned in the end, but that is not the main objective. I think the end game is giving the RNC the "out" certain people want.
