Because of the 20 holdouts and the rules changes McCarthy had to agree to, his power as Speaker is neutered. Trump is effectively Speaker and is calling the shots through his loyalists
I guess I don't understand how that works. I assumed once you are in the machine you are kept you there or killed you if you don't do soro's bidding.
McCarthy had to agree to a rule change in which a vote for the speaker to be removed can be initiated by a single person.
If he does something literally any of the 20 (or, any of the others for that matter) don't like they can start a vote to remove him and if removed, then the whole speaker nomination starts over.
I wonder if it it takes the same vote count electing him does, ie, he is basically removed until he gets 218 yes votes again or if it takes 218 votes to remove him?
