That's how I read it, too. I don't know where the term "get the shaft" originated, but I think we're getting it.

I've come across a few different 'origins' of the phrase but nothing definitive. Some say it comes from Europe in the Middle Ages when being buried vertically (because you couldn't afford a standard grave) was considered a slight. Others say it comes from a reference to a penis.
