The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) does not believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently preparing to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the agency's director General William Burns said.
"You have to take any threats very seriously, given everything at stake," Burns told the CBS Evening News.
He did, however, concede that "today we see no practical evidence in the American intelligence community that [Putin] is approaching actual use", or that there is "an immediate threat of using tactical nuclear weapons".
Asked if the Russian leader is bluffing when he says he is ready to use "all the means available" if the country's territorial integrity is under threat, Burns said it is "very difficult to say at this point."
The CIA director defined the rhetoric of Putin and other senior officials as"reckless and deeply inexplicable". He also suggested that a number of American politicians were depending to inform Moscow that such a decision would have "serious consequences".
