I think they had some working devices, but they used an element cocktail that just couldn't outperform crystal silicon on price.
Purified sand is usually going to be cheaper than weird trace elements.
I honestly don't know anything about it other than it ended up being a big waste of our money.
Hopefully at least some science or something was gained.

The wiki article seems to confirm what I remember, they just couldn't compete because regular cells got so cheap.
Perhaps at some point that technology will become economically feasible.
