The author hasn't mentioned the camel in the room: How to replace Biden with the coming presidential candidate without making Harris the President? Skipping her somehow, or replace her with the candidate, or replace her with the coming interim President first?
FTA:
It’s pretty clear that the left is organizing to dump Joe Biden when it becomes evident that he’s a certain loser in 2024. Rather that waiting for a Ted Kennedy-like figure to challenge him in the 2024 primaries, which would likely doom Democrats to certain defeat, the left will need to push him out early, and clear the calendar for one or more Democrats to organize a serious presidential campaign. (It goes without saying the Democratic Party intelligentsia knows that Kamala Harris is a hopeless candidate.)
What the author is saying is that they're getting ready to clear the field (including Harris) for a candidate they think can win. They're not trying to swap Biden out for someone else while he's still in office.
But forcing Biden out is not the problem the Democrats have to solve. When his handlers tell him that he has to retire he will do so immediately, citing sudden health problems.
To raise the chances of the next presidential candidate, he has to become the replacement for Biden first. Then he can score with the voters by reversing some of Biden's errors. The Republicans will do exactly that after the midterms and all the candidate has to do is to claim that he himself did it.
This can be done by replacing the President with the candidate. Or the candidate replaces Harris and does all the press conferences and speeches, while Biden remains President but becomes almost invisible.
In both cases there is no need to force Biden out by bad press, and the real problem the Democrats have to solve first is how to get rid of Kalamity Harris.
This can be done by replacing the President with the candidate. Or the candidate replaces Harris and does all the press conferences and speeches, while Biden remains President but becomes almost invisible.
This is definitely the smartest way to go about it, but that assumes they're smart.
