If I were american I would learn spanish, start by present tense form, being able to say pretty much anything in spanish with the present tense
From there you only need time markers, such as "yesterday" or "tomorrow" to indicate future or past if need be. Example:
Yesterday, I go to the supermarket, I buy a beer and guess who sells computers over there? Pablo
Tomorrow, I wake up and I go buy your stuffs. And then I call you
Etc
See how that works? Same deal in spanish, you only have to learn present ultimately. For a start that's good enough for being fully operational in LATAM, on your own. You have portuguese also but that's pretty much brazil only
