The goal isn't to "get him" at all - it's merely a continuation of the never ending news cycle of outrage and emergency. Once they "get him" the circus is over and ticket sales to the three rings drops off, so they never actually want that result. The result they want is fervor, on all sides.

Trump was right when he said that he was twitter's biggest traffic driver, and so it is with all other consumable media. The current outrage or emergency goes stale quickly so, accurate or not being irrelevant, the chefs are currently hard at work in the kitchen brewing up the next day's specials. Disease, famine, war, and (political) conquest all sell many newspapers to people who desire these things. Imagine needing, wanting an injection of anxiety on a daily basis. I believe they are sick, but those selling it don't care. Media are no better than street pushers at this point.

As a side note, if 7 hours of missing phone logs is a gotcha, what is 4 years worth of missing state department communications ran through the secretary's basement? If it weren't for double standards ...
