This isn't a rant as much as it is to acknowledge that FJB was right about lowering my expectations. For example... I recently had a month vacation on the East coast. I traveled by car and stayed in about a dozen hotels. There wasn't a single hotel that met my expectations. I need to mention that housekeeping services don't exist anymore at any price point. The entire industry has managed to essentially remove this once ubiquitous service once and for all. When I called guest services, it took so long for a response, I gave up.
I started off trying $60-120/night hotels from various chains. Not good. I won't be doing that anymore. Everyone sucked in terms of the loud obnoxious guests, run down rooms that needed to be renovated years ago, loud airconditioner, poor beds and smelly rooms and so on.
When I stayed in $150-$225/night rooms, the rooms were cleaner and newer, however, I noticed odd things like half stuffed pillows, no convenient outlets. In some cases, there weren't closets or hangers to hang clothes. This was surprising.
At the $300+ price point, things didn't improve much and you have to deal with valets and pretentious staff. Parking is no longer free. What you do get is nice location, though. The restaurants were also expensive and the food was only OK.
