What freedom and democracy is Montgomery talking about? Covid showed whatever freedom we had was gone to "flatten the curve". All for 2 weeks that became 2 years. And the 2020 election showed your vote doesn't count.

In the original Constitution every single living adult wasn't allowed to vote, only property owners. It wasn't some evil plot to deny suffrage to everyone but white men, but because they knew that people tend to vote in their selfish interests and that the interests of people with a significant financial stake in their community are more likely to align with the community's interests than are the interests of free-floating drifters that can just move on from one community to another without much cost or inconvenience.
In the original Constitution the person with the most electoral votes became the President and the runner-up became the Vice President. This also wasn't a quirky accident. They knew it would often lead to people of opposing parties being in office at the same time, and that was the design. Another little bit of checks and balances.
In the original Constitution Senators were chosen by the state legislatures instead of directly voted for by the people. Again, this was by design. The intention was that the Senate would be a chamber that was more insulated from the whims of popular opinion. It's also the reason each state is given an equal number of Senators.
Freedom you won't find any of that here. Lots of (((Democracy))) though.
