My wife is a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT). The DRT took over custodianship of the Alamo in 1906, at that time it was little more than a pile of ruble. Thru public donations and membership dues it was restored over time. The majority of the artifacts and documents were donated to the DRT, not the State of Texas. Bush tried to claim everything belonged to Texas, lawsuits ensued and Bush lost. Texas had to pay legal fees, etc. What inspired Bush was Phil Collins (British rockstar) wanted to donate his personal collection of Alamo documents and relics, he valued at $15mil. But, only if they were kept in a suitable museum, and were accepted as authentic and not challenged. Since the DRT didn't have the resources to meet his demands Bush stepped in and kicked out the DRT and used it as a stepping stone for higher office.
I always appreciate the backstory!
Nice. My folks are from San Antonio and my grandma was Jimmy Roger's wife's best friend. They (Jimmy) had a home in Kerrville.
I have been to the Alamo at least 15 million times. Okay, a lot.
My grandpa filmed the construction of the Hemisfare tower (tower of americas) in the sixties and I was one of the first up there.
Our daughter and granddaughters lived in San Antonio for about 20 years. Our oldest granddaughter hates the Alamo. She said EVERY school trip for 12 years was to the Alamo. Whenever anyone visited them, they had to take them to the Alamo. For her birthday I always try to find a souvenir or movie about the Alamo. Now that she's in her late 20s she finally sees the humor of my gifts.
That's hilarious, the gifts.
>Whenever anyone visited them, they had to take them to the Alamo.
Oh man can I ever relate to that lol !
It's weird, people all over the world, not just the US, know about the Alamo.
