It's impossible the demographics in them are just not there. Easier to just build new cities and let the old ones turn into the third world shitholes they were always destined too be.

Sparta did have a wall around it, helped them guard their city. walls are simple and do work. Of course it needs to be maintained, it's not 100% foolproof, walls degrade, need guards on them etc. Wall St got it's name for that, they know. The romans built many walls.
