We need nothing beyond state militias that were accounted for in the original documents. If you have a standing military they always evolve into what we currently have. It's like keeping a baby alligator or a bear or some shit as a pet. Cute when its a baby but when it grows up it eats you. Military hardware is incapable of evolving to meet the demands of the next war. All this shit we currently have (giant strategic military platforms and assets) is going to get smoked in a real conflict and new different tech is going to have to be completely rebuilt from scratch after the smoking so build what you need when you need it and don't in the in-between times. The key here is to have large scale robust modern manufacturing capabilities and an intelligent population capable of running them and then being able to repurpose them on demand. Thats how you defend yourself and win wars.
