Perhaps what is happening is an actual tragedy in the making. a real tragedy is where people knowingly sabotage or hurt themselves, in this case their own country, while continuing their actions. oedipus rex had the sense he was doing wrong by killing his father to marry his mother. he wasn't totally understanding the situation, but understood his actions harmful. literature can be educating.
