We are moving cross country in the next few months and to ship our truck is around $2000, plus airline tickets $2000 (1st class for 2 with a dog). That's a deal. If we drive, it puts 2500 mi on our new truck plus 2500 on the dodge diesel, plus the cost of fuel and hotels that would be about $7000-8000. In any case, it will require serious downsizing. I checked out trailer rental and it was $3000+. Truck rental was about $7500 w/o fuel. We own a car carrier 14ft and could use that to haul our furniture, etc. But still would be a drive husband would have to make. None of this crap I own is worth spending $10,000 to move it. Would be better off selling what we can and ship the rest. I had not looked into availability of trailer and/or truck rental, but that adds a new wrinkle.
I've been looking into relocation for a while now and am close to making it happen. So far we haven't decided whether we want to drive our stuff down, ship it and fly, or hire a mover. We're weighing the costs.
I've moved cross country 4 times. The drive is hellish. Given our elderly status anything we can do to prevent driving that far is a positive. I can just see me having one of my heart "spells" behind the wheel. I almost never drive and have an alert on my license.

I've moved three times, but none of them have been more than a few hundred miles away. This one is likely to be much further and while I hate to drive, I might just suck it up and do it. Thankfully I am still young enough (barely) to handle it.
Check into Old Dominion LTL. I've heard they are the cheapest for shipping your shit.
