California was fucking pretty reliably conservative all the way until 1994. They went for Clinton, but so did a lot of other red states then. In 1994 they passed Proposition 187 (en.wikipedia.org) by an 18 percentage point margin, that outlawed illegal aliens from public schools and public benefits.
