Marines don't salute in doors, unless they are 'under arms' (carrying weapons). They may have different protocols for the White House. That's the way it was back in ancient times when I was in.
A Marine just told me somewhat the same. He said sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, indoors.
But always do outdoors. It's been noticed they have been skipping some of those as well.
they had their backs turned to him outdoors... i think it inauguration .... if remember i will find it if you want... but it is a pretty easy search
I saw it, thanks.

Without a weapon, how is a serviceman in the White House materially different than any normal doorman or butler?
With a weapon, they're no better than any other joe at the range.
There's a lot of them in one place and they'll obey commands to fire instead of running away screaming like little girls. That's basically it.
Shot with a handful of mil and police and have been completely unimpressed by their shooting. Some of them seem like they never picked up a gun.
They have prettier uniforms.
