But then again, he could have been controlled opposition from the start.
The "controlled opposition" theory has a lot of holes in it that I have not yet found answers to.
The biggest one being: what's the point? If there had been a real conservative firebrand running, then I could see running Trump as controlled-op to pull the rug out from under him. If the American people had been willing to invoke Civil War 2.0 if Hillary had been elected, then I could see running Trump as controlled-op.
But neither of those two scenarios were true in 2015-2016. Everyone else running for POTUS was faker and gayer than Trump, and was pushing the same policies.
