The U.S. does not want a popular vote system because it would give Bay Area CA and NYC disproportionate control over the rest of the country that isn't like them. The coronavirus has been really useful in demonstrating this fact through a widespread response to where the greatest number of cases occurred in small parts of the U.S. this past year. Two places that had ridiculously bad policy and mismanaged infrastructure set off the alarm that CoVid was killing everyone and needed curbed using any means necesary. However, the other 98% of the geographical area of the U.S. did not have problems to the extent that Bay Area CA and NYC engineered for themselves.

This past year, the entirety of the U.S. has all had to suffer because a couple of places fucked up and dictated policy for places that weren't like them. That's democracy in a nutshell and why it has no place as a suitable government in a geographically and culturally diverse landscape.

Yep, they can secede and ruin / run their own places. Then we'll take them back once they purge

The dangerous thing about letting them do their own thing for any amount of time while seceded is that they could make foreign negotiations without legal penalty. CA could let China set up a joint military base on former U.S. soil and then we'd go from having a small-ish commie problem to a big one. While I fundamentally agree with letting them implement that ultimate, untried government of True Communism™ and succeeding in spades/s, the globo-homo agenda is to destroy the U.S. Leaving them uncontested for even a moment after secession would be too long of a reprieve on punishing them severely and mercilessly.
