The sheriff's deputies where I live seem pretty cool about everything. But, rural areas are so much nicer to live in than cities anyway. We're pretty free here.
The cops in my town are relatively cool, but they're still cops. It's a smallish town so they can't get away with too much BS and the police chief attends every public meeting of the town council. A few times he's been called on the carpet for the behavior of his staff.
Last winter I was outside on a sunny day, no wind, shoveling snow off the edge of our shops drive without a coat on. A rookie stopped by to introduce himself and asked if I owned the shop. I told him I did. We had a nice chat. I told him he can park his vehicle at the edge of our lot, to catch the few speeders there are, since that cop car also serves as a warning to out of towners looking for a small place to break in to. At least, that's my theory.
