Some of my great grandparents came over from Sicily and were initially freaked out, too. They settled in Little Italy, barely learned English, but made sure their kids did. My grandparents didn't even speak Italian to their kids. My dad only knew a few phrases. They wanted the kids to become good Americans. NYC's Little Italy is a bare shadow of what it once was because the immigrants assimilated into society and moved out.
