A number of years ago, Texaco in New Orleans met everyone at the door in the morning. If you were retained you got to go in. If not, they had a box of your personal effects for you. Then they sent you home

Something similar happened when I was at AT&T. They shuffled everyone who was to be let go that day into a large conference room near the main entrance and exchanged employee badges and company property for employee personal effects.
