You don't make arguments like this when you view yourself as a public servant enacting the will of People. You make arguments like this when you are a petty tyrant seeking to enforce *your own* will, but with a pesky election in the way of your domination. I have no doubt that the modern Democrat would dispose of elections the first instant they could get away with it.
