If there is one thing that politicians have taught us, it is that politicians don't care about petitions.

One of the last albums the Firesign Theater put out was something called "Boom dot bust." Right around 2000, it followed the antics of a town called Billville where everyone was named some variant of Bill.

Billville's claim to fame - other than the wild tornado preserve - was that they hung their first mayor from the flagpole when he didn't perform to the standards of the people. In the present day, the current mayor is also running afoul of the people's ire, and they stand outside his office window chanting "The mayor is the problem! The flagpole is the answer! We hung the first one, we can hang another!"

It's a strange album, the world they live in is just a bit that side of paranormally WTF? Not sure what made me think of that, have not listened to it for years.

An idea that just came to me today was: what if EVERY politician and civil servant had to go through an election to see if they were going to get a pension? You'd need to also get rid of their abilitiy to accept bribes or do insider trading, but essentially government jobs should have some way of weeding out anybody who is not going to give it their all and earn that pension.
