Any Watchmen material that isn't the original comic (and maybe that live action movie) is bad. The prequel comics are very poor imitations and there's one crossover with the official DC continuity that continues the comic, but seems to misunderstand Watchmen is making fun of it when it isn't having a plothole.
I recall enjoying the before watchmen comics of the comedian and rorschach. There was also the one chick who was rescuing children from highly connected elite pedophiles, which was a little to nail-on-the-head for the time and probably has something to do with this new steaming pile of abortion on hbo.
I'm pretty sure the HBO show is a separate continuity from the original comic and its prequels. I didn't feel like the prequel comics had the proper feel, though I can't expect DC to faithfully make something with an IP that deconstructs their works.
