*Especially* when taken with opiates, say, fentanyl. There's a known interaction between benzodiazepines and opiates that causes respiratory suppression to a massive degree; in other words, it makes it very, very hard to breathe, eventually impossible. But yeah it was the knee on the shoulder blades that did him in.
