It’s much more than that, though.
Penicillin is a great example. Cancer research. And even if some were disfigured, how many lives have been saved by our increased understanding of anatomy and physiology? I know mine was. One stupid night with a couple stupid mistakes, and a life saving operation that would’ve left me for dead 100 years ago.
Hell, even understanding of germs and the need to wash our hands. Or disinfection of water. Those advances sure as fuck weren’t coming out of “never learned how to sail” Africa.
