While it may not be true they created an on-paper exemption for themselves, it's definitely true that they are defacto exempt if they are leftists. I'm sure the IRS still goes after Republican politicians on the regular, though.
Terry Lemons, Communications and Liaison Chief at the IRS, told Reuters via email that the claim is false.
