My exception is the book 'West with the Wind' by Beryl Markham. First woman pilot in Africa, in the 1920s. Great book.

Also Earthsea, by Le Guin - it is so well written, that I keep forgetting that the author was a woman! But hey, I grew up with Conan the Barbarian stories my dad forced me to read (thanx dad!!), so I guess this has shaped me in many ways lol.
