I think they catch it on another bumper or some fixed object like a guardrail or something else.

This is correct. They underestimate the bumper clearance needed and catch the edge on something. I've seen a few get caught gas station pump guards as they pull out of the pump lane.

You get rear ended by a fucking spic flying down the highway that doesn't have insurance and the modern design of the fucking bumper means you have to pay $2k to replace a bunch of fucking bent brackets that you can't see or else a new bumper won't seat properly on it.
