Truck drivers don't get enough credit.

They are some of the most resourceful, resilient, and spatially aware people on earth. These guys pull of absurd shit like this on a regular basis. Clearly, the man in the video has done this exact maneuver before, probably many times- he found what worked for him. Can't see behind yourself because trailer is in the way? Then do this! It's not even that dangerous- he's got both feet on stable ground, one hand gripping something, and the other using the wheel. The guy knows what he's doing.

If you've ever worked with truck drivers, you'll gain a new respect for them. The hours they put in, the shit they have to put up with when making pickups or deliveries, the independence they must have- these are all very admirable qualities.

Of course, there are many shitheads among them- but this is the nature of any occupation.

I dislike the stereotype of truckers being "meth addict rednecks". Sure, some of them are that- but if you are a CDL holder and driving commercially, drug use is very risky- trucker smokes a bit of pot on Saturday at home, then on Thursday he's driving, some jackass rear-ends him... and now he's probably going to have to take a drug test and lose his CDL and job. The driving part of the job is the easy part- sitting in a truck and being paid (very well) to drive for 6 hours, spend a few hours at a pickup or delivery, and then head back to the depot and clock out; most people would kill to have a job like this. You can eat and drink, listen to music, w/e- just drive. The tricky parts are like what we see in this video.

Okay, I'm done fellating truck drivers. Just remember this the next time you're trying to pass a trucker on the highway because they're only going 65 mph; chances are, they have a limiter on the truck that doesn't allow them to go any faster!

I bet he saw someone doing that and thought it ridiculous, then tried it.

At that point I'd just get a wireless backup cam. Attach a magnet and slap it on the back of the trailer.

In 2021, you'd think shit like this would be standard in most companies. But no- the vast majority of tractor trailer drivers are still practically blinded to objects directly behind them.

But you can be damned sure all kinds of objectively useless safety bullshit is purchased, at great cost (and probably inconvenience for employees) to the company. Drivers needing to be able to fucking see what is behind them, though? Meh, that's not high priority- we need to focus on more stringent covid testing!!

Funny thing is they are required on all new cars now. So fools will back out of their driveways using them and not see the oncoming car because they didn't turn around.

I can back a condo with a 53' trailer anywhere it can fit but I can't use a camera to even back a 4 wheeler for shit. It just throws me off.

Sounds like you've become so used to relying on your innate, lifelong developed spatial awareness to maneuver trailers that you simply don't need the extra feature.

I had to get my car serviced a while back, got a rental with a backup camera- I found my eyes flicking back and forth between the screen and my rear view mirror so much, I couldn't focus and I just shut off the screen and parallel parked without it. I turned it back on to help me straighten out the parking job and give the other cars some good room, though, so I think cameras like this could be useful for you in certain situations.

I know the exact dimensions of my cars to the point I can tell at first glance if I can dive into a parallel parking spot like race car drivers diving into their pit boxes on a busy and crowded pit road. When renting a car that has all the safety gizmos, it is quite disorienting to the point I feel like it is fighting me.

Yeah I could see that, no peripheral vision. Having them on every car and truck is silly but the detachable trailer ones are cool.
