My father wants to take my brother and myself and my brother's family and maybe my dad's girlfriend if she wants to go to Costa Rica in the next year. But I think he's a little overwhelmed with life in general and hasn't really planned anything. My brother and I were talking about it today and my brother's been there before and he loves it. I've never been I don't really care to go but I'm going to go because I want to see the kids have fun and hopefully we'll all make some memories together.

Any of you know of any all-inclusive resorts with villas that are close to a beach and volcanoes? I would be interested in doing a volcano tour and maybe a swim at the beach. I think we would go for about 5 days.

The villa would be because my brother and his son would take a room, his daughter and wife would take another room, I would have my own room and my dad would have a room with himself and or his lady. The kids are all so teenagers so they're going to want to do teenager stuff. They don't want to hang out with us boring old adults. That being said I don't want them to run off with local boys and girls to get in any trouble but then again also tourist boys and girls either. But that's more my brother's problem to handle with the family supporting his decisions. Any advice or experience you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

No. Had a friend who lived there for a couple of years in the Peace Corps. 22 species of venomous snakes. He kept a pet pig to kill the snakes

Yeah that sounds pretty horrific. My big thing is the bot flies. My luck I would get botfly's to sting me all over the face.

I to go to Costa somewhat regularly for surf and dive. Both sides have their advantages, and and overall both everything, but it really comes down to do you want all "the best" of Costa but with more crowds and more touristy feel, or do you want an off the neaten path experience?

Pacific has essentially year round great surfing, spectacular diving with "big game" dolphins whale sharks giant mantas seasonal whales, etc. Pacific has all the most iconic national parks and bigger mountains for hiking and such to include volcanos. Pacific in most areas will have tons of tourists especially in season you'd expect, and they cater directly. Big resorts. International brands. Etc.

Carribbean has surfing, but seasonal swells (winter) and other than a couple key breaks much less impressive. It has diving and it's very good with very clear water and high vis, but think reef fish and less big game. It has hiking but the mountains are smaller and no volcanos (though there are some in the interior that cn be day tripped from Carribbean side). It is much less built up for tourists and you will get a more off the beaten path feel. Carribbean being less built out for tourism it is also somewhat cheaper if it makes a difference, and it's not like tourism is unheard of so you'll have no trouble getting around or anything.

Just depends what vibe you're looking for.

Thanks for sharing this. I don't surf but maybe the kids would want to take a lesson or two. Might make my dad happy to watch the grandkids screw around on surfboards. He used to surf when he lived on Long Island. I'd be in to snorkeling though, I have done that before and really enjoyed it. To be honest I don't think anyone's going to be hiking up volcanoes but we would just like to see them. I know my brother had mentioned that they want to do some white water rafting and do a zip line. I think he might be looking for more of a tourist feel.

My father also wants to go in June. I'm not sure what that translates to but I think that's the rainy season right? Would there be a preferable side to going at that time of year?

So generally during rainy season Carribbean side doesn't get it as heavy as Pacific cause it flows from west to east so often it will dump outthe heaviest rain before it makes it acorss the mountains and lighter showers in the east. June is technically rainy season, but it's not full on yet. I prob wouldn't recommend going Pacific side from like Aug to Oct as you will def have days where it just pours all day. I go June to the Pacific when school gets out to take the kid surfing and you're looking at like Florida summer weather if you know what I mean by that. In short hot sunny mornings and early afternoon, mid afternoon heavy rain for about an hour or two and then cleared up by late afternoon. It's basically the same on the Carib side just the rain period will be shorter and lighter which means you might not have to abaondon your outdoor activity if you don't might being out in a drizzle, but on Pacific you're prob stopping everything and waiting for like an hour or two.

So I mean yeah, you can def do Pacific in June, just make your plans for your big activities to be morning and be ready to go chill inside somewhere for an hour or two between like 2-4.

Yeah my father lives in Florida off and on throughout the year. So I was there in June a couple years ago and I know what you're talking about. I sat at the airport terminal for hours waiting for the weather to clear.

Can you do any snorkeling on the Pacific side or is it strictly surfing? So maybe if the kids do a surfing lesson or two some of us can go snorkeling.

The first thing you want to figure out is do you want to go to the Pacific coast or the Gulf of America Coast.

Which side is nicer? Which side can you access a volcano tour easily?

I am getting a strange feeling you are going to throw someone in said volcano.

I never been but know folks that have. Rent a house. Rent a cook. Rent a driver.

Everything runs on money, and it don’t take much.

If you so much as fucking mention helicopter rides I know I wasn’t off base.

Oh also, I remember one thing a buddy said, they are dead serious about sex travelers. Signs and shit about not doing it. They don’t want you thinking you can find a whore because shit is cheap.

Yeah my plan is to not go down there and have sex with a whore. My plan is to drink a beer on my chaise lounge and look at the ocean. Maybe try to flirt with a couple of swedish or Norwegian ladies. Go for a swim in the ocean once or twice, go look at a volcano (just the base I really can't hike far anymore).

My brother wants to take his family on all these wild daily trips. So they'll probably run off the whole time and only come back at night. So I'll be stuck with my father at the resort. But I do agree with you about getting the house. I think they want an all-inclusive resort though but I'm not sure because there's also talk about going out to eat. I'm kind of doing my own research separately seeing my brother brought it up but he's useless as tits on a man when it comes to any type of organizing anything. His wife puts everything together but I honestly don't really like her so I wouldn't be working with her to do this.

What I'd really like to do and I've been looking around for is a villa on an all-inclusive resort. All I've been able to find though though are suites and that's only three bedrooms. And so that leaves me sleeping on the couch for a week. Which while I'm not totally against I'm also at the mercy of everybody 's schedule. I found a company that manages a bunch of villas but you're on your own for planning excursions and I just know how that will end up. I think they're looking for going to the concierge and then booking a white water raft tour for the next day and getting on a bus and having the bus take you there with the other tourists from the hotel.

The entire country is pretty small, but if you have to travel down winding jungle roads, travel time can suck. The 2 coats are pretty different, rugged and wild on the Pacific side, probably better for surfing. The Gulf side is a lot more calm with sandier beaches.

Having said that, if you are only planning on doing a volcano tour and spending the rest of the time on a beach, then I would say find the tour you want, then finding a resort closest to the tour, that is the kind of place you want to stay at.

A very good point. I've got to figure out what I want to do there. And my brother's got to figure out what he wants to do there. Then we have to figure out what accommodations meet somewhere in the middle. And the accommodations have to fit everybody's needs. I'll sleep on a couch I have no fear but no one else is going to do that. If my father doesn't bring his girlfriend he's going to want me to sleep in the same room which I absolutely do not want to do because he snores so unbelievably loud it's traumatizing.
