A guy a from church was mentioning his sister in law was having a hell of a time getting to Belarus to deal with some local matters - he says her mom died.

The way he put it, she grew up there, moved to the US a decade back and got her US citizenship. She still has her Belarusian passport, but it expires soon. Now she’s trying to get back so she can both renew the Belarusian passport as well as take care of her mom’s estate.

The problem is, getting to Belarus is a total shitshow. There are no direct flights, obviously. She’ll probably route through Turkey. Flying out she’s apparently planning to use her Belarusian passport instead of her US one, allegedly the Belarusian customs folks will have a problem if she uses two separate passports for the trip from the US to Minsk.

Now, of course, the Ukraine has decided to be stupid assholes and make things worse, so Lukashenko is pissed and drafting able bodied males.

Her dad (he and the mom divorced, I guess) lives in the US, and he’s advised her not to go.

What’s frustrating for me hearing this is that this poor girl is just trying to get back to take care of family business, and Jewlenskyy has made her choose between getting closure with her mom and risking her life, or skipping it and staying here.

This is why once you get out of a shithole, you never go back .

I'm still not clear which one is the shit hole.

I’m guessing her husband would want her back, even if she escaped the shithole US.

Had a co-worker buddy go to Venezuela a few years ago and this was back in 2019 when shit was really bad. Pretty much the same story. Going wasn't much of a problem. What was the problem is when he got back the TSA fuckheads gave him a hard time despite being a US citizen.
