I'm being asked to go on a trip with a family member. It's a bus tour which I hate but if they pay for it maybe it'll be a little less horrific. They originally want to do it in late September but I've already committed to do something else to the middle of September and I more than likely won't have enough time to switch gears and head out for the trip. Also it doesn't give me enough time if something goes wrong in my trip to correct anything. They just threw this at me today and apparently it's been stewing in their brain for a while. They've never asked me the technical details about my trip but they know that I was going on it. Regardless, how's the weather?

I was also thinking about asking them to instead of doing the bus tour have a guided tour with somebody driving us around, at least in Ireland. Then Scotland we could rent a car that the family member could drive. I've heard pretty good things about guided tours. Where local lads and lasses take you around for a bunch of days and show you stuff. To me it seems a little bit more personal instead of getting crammed onto a bus with a bunch of idiots driving for hours and hours getting shuffled in and out of ridiculously touristy areas. The only thing is, it might backfire because if we get a black or a camel jockey all bets are off, it will be a sacrilege. So also I wonder how would we have that not happen?

I work in travel and I'd look into this for sure. Bus tours have tight schedules, private guides are a great experience. You can also look at bandbireland.com. They're bed and breakfast vouchers you can book all over Ireland. It's an actual B&B where the owners live there and cook you breakfast, give tips on where to go in town. All homes are inspected and certified, so no weird vacation rentals.

Bus tours are more economical than private tours/guides. I've had several clients rent a car and wandered, they always loved it.

Let me ask you this is there an age restriction for driving in Ireland? I'd be going with my dad and he's in his late seventies. I heard you couldn't after 75 but that might be in Australia, I can't really remember. Also when do you recommend going over?
