When it (the trans thing) objected to the "appropriateness" of the question, the senator could have replied:
"My apologies, let me rephrase that: Do you carry X and Y chromosomes?"
The rephrasing would have been very appropriate and even more to the point. For example, if a man gets his dick shot off in a war, is he then a woman? No. So really the lack of certain genitalia makes no difference to gender. It's more the mentally damaged act of pretending to be the other gender which is really the crux of the issue.
