1) Can they communicate in the written word (careful, developed handwriting), the level of their vocabulary, their ability to put ideas to paper in a way that others can understand?
2) What they have to communicate: "small talk"-equivalent, or can they, given the medium of long-form letter, delve into harder/tougher/deeper topics? What do they have to say when they have a week(s) to compose the thought?
3) Are they at all willing to forgo social media or text/phone-based communication, given their shortfalls in conveying the nuances of meaning?

I have applied this throughout my (limited) dating life, and it has never been a bad idea. I have years of letters of just good "conversation" - all of which we mutually learned a great deal from. Whomever I spend my life with absolutely must have years worth of intellect.

I think this applies to anyone, male or female. It is indeed a lost art and the items you noted are skills that need to be preserved and encouraged.

Writing letters is very charming. I used to do that with a friend for a little while. It was so much fun to exchange letters.
