Been wanting to do this forever. Neighbor left out corn for animals, dried naturally so I didn't have to do that part, but could only drill a 3/4 chamber which is less desirable. Was gonna get bamboo for stem, but decided on hollowing pith on a stick the hard way. Not bad, but still needs breaking in.

I always liked Manzanita for a pipe bowl. Desert Ironwood works even better and lasts forever. Get the longest drill bit you can find and drill into a piece of maple and leave it in the wood then spin the wood on the drillbit and hold sand paper over it as the drill spins it. Eventually you can make a long pipe stem with an even thickenss around the hole. Pull the bit out without breaking it and stick it in the bowl. Best weed pipe ever. Lasts a lifetime.

I picked up a vintage Kleen Ream pipe reaming tool from ebay for like $3 that included a drill bit in the handle that is probably 4" long. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/83316661831348954/. It was a great investment and is built like a brick shit house. It would probably work well for make stems.
