That's cool how they interlace the base and emitter to maximize area / minimize impedance. Seems like we're not this clever anymore.
Yeah that is definitely a genius move. The narrowing/widening metal channels at the collector/emitter ends are also very clever so that current handling is optimized where it is highest. If you've not looked into the 555 timer chip, I recommend checking it out. Some really cool things were done there too and they became standards that linear chip makers would continue with for decades.
