Tim had just concluded 2 1/2 years with the firm, deftly and doggedly returning a moribund operation into the leader, bar none... well, at least he was told that his team's results had "raised the bar".
A remote operation, the farewell was not oversachharine nor was it prolonged. Just two weeks of training the new guy - because honestly why hire a woman and throw all the progress in the trash - a surprise cake, a goodbye e-mail, and everything tied neatly with a bow. Said individual well wishes to each of the crew as they carry on with the torch, fighting the good fight.
Tim walked out of the door for the last time, setting the motion detector alarm off with an odd double-chirp. He suppressed the urge to jump and fist-pump to celebrate his self-surgical-removal from the company, essential though he had become and shocking though his departure was.
He climbed into his 26-year-old truck and the aftermarket radio turned on automatically, to the oldies station. Not ten seconds later, "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac came on. Tim sighed at the coincidence, shifted into gear, and turned the volume dial higher.
